What do you think the contradictions in Mockingbird and Stan mean in Eminem’s songs?

Here are the contradiction I see in Mockingbird

“I’m trying to give you the life I never had” vs. “Daddy’s always on the move”
Eminem says he wants to give his kids a better life than he had, but he’s often gone for work or other stuff.
Contradiction: He wants to be there for them emotionally, but he can’t always be there physically.

“No more crying, Daddy’s here” vs. “It may seem confusing”
He promises to protect them and make things okay, but he admits that life is still confusing for them.
Contradiction: He wants everything to be smooth, but life is messy.

“We did not plan it to be this way” vs. “Everything happens for a reason”
He says he didn’t plan the family problems, but also says it’s meant to happen.
Contradiction: Blaming fate vs. taking responsibility for the situation.

Here are the contradiction I see in Stan:

"I’m not mad” vs. constant complaints and anger
Stan keeps saying he’s not mad, but most of what he writes shows he is frustrated and upset.
Contradiction: He says he’s calm, but he’s really not.

“I’m your biggest fan” vs. pressuring Eminem
He says he respects Eminem, but then demands attention and acts like they’re super close.
Contradiction: He claims to respect Slim, but he ignores boundaries.

“You understand me” vs. misunderstanding the songs
Stan thinks Eminem’s lyrics are literal advice, but they’re actually just stories or exaggerations.
Contradiction: He thinks he understands Eminem completely, but he actually misunderstands him.

Blaming Slim for personal problems Stan blames Eminem for his own life struggles                and expects him to fix things.
Contradiction: He wants someone else to solve his problems instead of taking                responsibility himself.

Mockingbird -When he tells his daughters he knows life feels confusing but he’s trying his best to protect them — it really shows his love and honesty. When he says he and their mom never planned things to fall apart — it’s a strong moment that shows how painful the situation was.

Stan-when Stan talks about being Eminem’s “biggest fan” and how he has all his old music — it shows how deep his obsession is.When Eminem finally writes back and tells Stan he needs real help and support — it’s powerful because it shows the huge difference between the two perspectives.

What words, phrases, use of language, images particularly struck you?  Why? This a basically a brief passage analysis.
Both songs use storytelling and emotional language, but their themes are pretty different. “Say Something” focuses on a relationship falling apart and the feeling of giving up after trying for so long, while “Stan” is more about obsession, mental struggle, and how fandom can go way too far. They both use strong imagery and repetition to get their emotions across, but “Say Something” feels quiet and sad, and “Stan” feels intense and kind of unsettling. Even with those differences, they both show how overwhelming emotions can get when communication breaks down.

Both songs have unique structures that match their themes. “Say Something” is really minimal and repetitive, which fits the feeling of someone slowly giving up and running out of things to say. “Stan,” on the other hand, uses a letter that becomes more chaotic as the song goes on, which helps show how the character is losing control. The structure in each song isn’t just for style it makes the emotions feel more real.

Any associations, personal connections, daydreams triggered by the reading/listening?  What insights do these offer about the text and about you as a reader/listener?

When I listen to Mockingbird certain lines hit me because they feel real like when he talks about trying his best but things still end up messy. It reminds me of how growing up can be confusing even when people around you are trying and how sometimes you have to hold yourself together even if life doesn't make sense yet. The song makes me think about family change and how you can love people even when everything feels complicated. It shows me that a lot of emotions I've felt aren't just mine and that other people go through them too and that makes the song feel more honest and comforting.

When I listen to Stan the thing that stands out to me is how the emotions keep getting stronger and more intense. It makes me think about how people can feel unheard or misunderstood and how that can build up over time. The song reminds me that communication really matters and that sometimes people hide how overwhelmed they are. It also shows how easy it is for things to get out of control when someone puts too much pressure on one person or one idea. Listening to it makes me more aware of how important it is to check in with yourself and others and not let feelings stay bottled up.

  1. Hi Milton! I like how you described the contradictions in some of Eminem's songs. I think that he wrote the songs based off alot of strong emotions so that could be a reason that he contradicts himself so much. Since everyone tends to have feelings that conflict with other feelings. To help answer your question, I saw another example of how Eminem contradicts himself. Eminem sings, "straighten up, little soldier/stifen up that upper lip" (Mockingbird). Then later in that same song he sings, "We feel how we feel inside" (Mockingbird). It seems that he is contradicting himself about how his child should feel. He seems to valid the child's emotions by saying "we feel how we feel inside" but earlier in the song he had referred to telling his child to stop crying and to "straighten up." I think that he contradicts himself because he doesn't know how to make his child feel better. He wants them to stop talking but he also wants to comfort them. I think because he has these conflicting desires, they appear in the songs.

  2. Hi Milton! I really liked your explanation of the contradictions in Mockingbird and Stan and how they show different sides of emotion. I agree with your idea that in Mockingbird Eminem wants to protect his daughter but also struggles with the right way to do that. One contradiction that stood out to me is when he tells her to be strong and stop crying, but later admits, "we feel how we feel inside" (Eminem, "Mockingbird"). That makes it seem like he believes his emotions are natural, yet he still feels pressure to teach his kids not to show them. I think this shows that he is caught between the way he was raised and the kind of parent he wants to be. Your point about life being messy even when he promises everything will be okay connects to this because he cannot fully control their pain. In Stan, the contradictions feel more dangerous because Stan says “I’m not mad” while everything he writes sounds angry (Eminem, “Stan”). This made me think that both songs deal with people who do not know how to handle strong feelings, just in different ways. I also noticed that Eminem uses gentle language for his daughters but harsh language when talking about real life, which makes the emotions feel conflicted. Overall, I think the contradictions in both songs show that love and pain can exist at the same time and that figuring out how to express that is not easy.

  3. I think you did a good job explaining the contradictions in Eminem's songs Mockingbird and Stan. After reading your contradictions and listening to both of these songs I think all of your contradictions are understandable. Another thing I noticed that could add to your contradictions is when he starts the song by saying "I know you probably hear this every day, but I'm your biggest fan", then towards the middle of the song he is talking about his brother and says, "He wants to be just like you, man, he likes you more than I do" (Stan). In the song Stan is expressing he likes Eminem more than anyone else, but then later when speaking about his brother he contradicts himself. Throughout the whole song it seems like Stan is becoming less and less impressed by Eminem, if he still liked Eminem as much as before he would have stayed his biggest fan. Now looking at the song Mockingbird there are contradictions in Eminems tone. When he addresses his daughters in the song he speaks more gentle but when speaking about anything else his tone is more harsh and aggressive. I think your contradictions were done well but could use a little more description for each individual one, but you did a great job!

  4. Hi Milton! I agree with the contradictions you found, and you did a good job finding so many examples. One thing I would maybe add is how the songs can contradict each other, not just themselves. For example, while Stan is more in line with emotional chaos, Mockingbird shows emotional protection. In the first, the emotions are out of control, shown in the line “I drank a fifth of vodka, you dare me to drive?,” (Stan). In the second, the tone is steady and comforting, with Eminem telling his daughter, “We’re gonna get through this” (Mockingbird). I think this shows a contradiction because one is showing how unchecked and out of control feelings lead to harmful things, and the other is sending a message of calmness and protectiveness. You mentioned some emotions with the songs but I would maybe try to go more in depth with comparing the two!

  5. HI Milton! You did great explaining the contradictions in “Mockingbird” and “stan”, it shows how complicated emotions really are. In the Mockingbird, Eminem says that he wants to give his daughter a better life, but he is often gone because of his work. That shows how hard it could be to balance life and work while being there for her. In Stan, the contradictions show obsession and some denial. Stan says that he's not mad, but he clearly is, showing he doesn't understand his own feelings. He says he's “Eminem’s biggest fan,” but he blames him. His admiration can become unhealthy. I believe that the contradictions make both of the songs feel more real.

  6. Milton, I love your focus on the contradictions in Eminem's songs. For me, they almost function like a mirror to society. We are always navigating contradictions.
